An excavation or road work has left a gap in the road about 18 inches wide and up to 3 inches deep perpendicular to the road. The only indication to road users that an obstacle was present was a small, ground level sign off to the side of the road at the location of the obstacle which is both easy to miss and does not give sufficient advance warning.

The cyclist was forced to jump over this obstacle. Had the cyclist not jumped and hit the obstacle at speed, the result could have been damage to the bike, or worse, a crash resulting in the cyclist being thrown over the handlebars head first.
