Swerving to avoid people walking out into bike lane

cycling home through Gosforth some people walked out in front of me to cross the bike path. coming from behind a van i did not see them and they didn't seem to look. while swerving to avoid them i hit a bollard and in the process broke and dislocated my ring finger on my left hand and scratched my face.
